The military has a long and proud history in Danville, Kentucky. The city was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1795, and the first navy ship to dock there was the USS Constitution on October 15, 1797. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down the courthouse in Danville, which led to the Battle of Danville. The Union army eventually captured the city and drove the Confederates out. From its early days as a port town, Danville became an important center for naval operations during World War I and II. The Navy’s Third Fleet arrived here on November 12, 1942 to take part in Operation Neptune’s Spear—the largest amphibious invasion ever mounted against Japan—and later played an essential role in Operation Coral Sea. During World War III, Danville served as homeport for USS Louisville (LST-1) and USS Wainwright (LHD-5). Today,Danville is one of America’s most active naval cities with more than 1,000 service members stationed here at various installations. More than 100 boats prowl the riverine environment at Norfolk Naval Shipyard; nearly all these are manned by sailors from Marine Corps Reserve Units based hereabouts; while ashore there are scores of civilian contractors engaged in some manner relating to Naval construction or support services including police work on Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst; federal security patrols aboard Norfolk International Airport; installation maintenance; repair/maintenance of ships docked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard or other nearby yards…. Danville is a small town in Kentucky, located about 20 miles southwest of Louisville. The population was 7,907 at the 2010 census. Danville is the county seat of Campbell County. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The site where Danville now stands was first inhabited by the Shawnee Indians in 1778. A post office called Danville was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1911. In 1839, Daniel Boone discovered what would eventually become Danville while exploring what is now Campbell County on his way to survey land for a new line of railroad. He named the settlement after himself and his wife Margaret (Fenton) Boone. In 1846, General James Hays's Cavalry brigade arrived at Danville from Lebanon to replace troops lost during the Mexican-American War. General Hays had been ordered to take possession of all lands east of Georgetown River that were not owned by United States citizens or Mexican forces under Spanish occupation. A local store opened in 1847 and soon became one of the most important commercial institutions in rural Appalachia. In 1861, Confederate soldiers burned down the store while retreating from Union forces under Brigadier General JEB Stuart duringthe Battle of Blackburnsboro Bridge; this event helped launch an offensive against Union control that led to secession two years later. Three years later, when Union troops moved into Campbell County to restore order following elections that had been boycotted becauseof secessionist sentiment among many residents, they burned down several businesses including stores belonging to Captain Wm Fenton and Major John Ketchum near present-day Parkersburg Boulevard and Washington Street). This episode known as "The Burning of DanVILLE" has come to symbolize Kentucky's experience with Reconstructionism as well as its role in early twentieth century American history generally
