Grant made his headquarters here during his campaign against slavery in America. After he won the war, he returned to Elizabethtown and lived there until his death in 1885. In 1898, he was buried at Green Hill Cemetery in Lexington, Kentucky. During World War II, Elizabethtown served as a concentration camp for Japanese Americans serving in the United States military during World War II (the " engage" period). In 1836-37, there was an Indian war fought between two groups of Native Americans known as the Shawnee and Creek Indians at what is now Park Lane Road and Ninth Street; this event is considered one of the earliest examples of organized warfare between Native Americans and white people in Kentucky
