The first store was built on the present site of Elizabethtown in 1837 by Solomon Waddell and his wife Rebecca. A sawmill and grist mill were also built there soon after. In 1850, a school was established in Elizabethtown by Rev. John Dutton and Dr. Benjamin Goodspeed. In 1892, the town had a population of only 100 people and no businesses existed other than the three stores mentioned earlier. However, over time, Elizabethtown grew rapidly as more people moved to the community from surrounding rural areas around it. By 1910, Elizabethtown had a population of 519 people and fifteen businesses including a grocery store, post office, doctor's office, bank (the first bank in Jefferson County), Ford car dealership (later JK Wilkins Furniture), and several churches- all within one mile of each other! By 1920Elizabethtown had an estimated population of 2,500 residents! However due to World War II efforts by the US government to provide munitions for troops stationed abroad - manyElizabethtown residents left for good during that time period- its population actually decreased to 1,500 by 1940! By 1970Elizabethstown had an estimated population of 500 residents again! However due to economic difficulties throughout much of Kentucky during this time period - particularly those affecting agriculture - its population declined even further to 350 by 2000! Today its total population is still less than 300 persons; however its unique history makes it an interesting place to visit despite its lowpopulation density
