The United States Air Force was first activated on Intelligence gathering and reconnaissance missions over the continental United States in 1947. In 1952, the USAF was divided into wings which were then divided into groups. Groups were later disbanded and the wing structure remained unchanged until AFB Dayton, Ohio closed its doors in 1973. The last major change to USAF air power came with the creation of Tactical Air Command in 1945. This organization provided operational control for all fighter aircraft within AFSC territory as well as strategic bomber forces. With TAC's dissolution, AFSC jurisdiction passed from USAF to Tactical Air Command Headquarters at Maxwell AFB Alabama. As a result of this change, Tactical Air Command delegated authority for air defense assets (e.g., interceptors) from AFSC to TACC while retaining responsibility for strategic bombers such as the B-52 Stratofortress and KC-135 Stratotanker. With these changes in command, it became clear that USAF7th Bomber Wing stationed at Frankfort Kentucky needed a new home if it were ever going to compete with NATO allies in terms of airpower projection capabilities. In July 1969, after months of planning and funding, Colonel James Fenton assumed command of 7 BW and began preparations for takeoff from Naval Station Louisville Kentucky on October 1st 1969 under Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to provide intelligence support for peacekeeping operations conducted by South Vietnam against North Vietnam during their Easter Offensive campaign! The 7 BW mission was successful enough that Colonel Fenton decided to keep the unit permanently located at NAS Louisville instead of mothballing it like occurred earlier when Wright Patterson AFB was selected as the primary home station due to its geography similarities with Frankfort KY! Since 1970 when 7 BW moved back out onto I-65 near Frankfort KY there have been several expansions/modifications/updates made to both squadron facilities as well as housing units adjacent thereto including: In 1992 Brigadier General David Kapp assigned 7 BW3d Bombardment Wing (Air Combat Command) status effective January 1st 1993 having previously served concurrently as Commander 3d Bombardment Wing Douglas AAF McChord AFB WA under TAC commander General Richard Myers who had also been commanding officer at RAF Fairford England since 1994 prior thereto! It should be noted here that given that HQ AFC is an Italian unit headquartered at Rome Italy whereas HQ III Fighter Wing is an American unit housed primarily at Selfridge MI under Major General John Jumper who currently leads II Fighter Wing directorship despite his previous assignment -HQ AFC has always entitled itself "Air CombatCommand" therefore allowing any future name changes or re-designations without changing Squadron designation thereby maintaining continuity between Squadrons and Headquarters personnel!!! ] Two years later on November 5th 1995 LtCol Rick Moench assumed command following Lt Col Don Armstrong's retirement effective December 31st1994! Rick Moench had previously commanded squadrons numbered 176TCM(later 9th FS), 348TCM(later 10th FS), 401TFS(later 11th FS), 431TCM(later 12th FS) & 602FCW(now 419 FW). He will serve concurrently with LtCol Jeff Smith who will takecommand Of EOD Squadron providing airborne warning and control capability over I Corps area encompassing most of central Iraq operating jointly with Iraqi Freedom Forces elements also!!]
