The first coffeehouses were established in the early 1800s and the business district around First Baptist Church was known as "The Coffee House District." In 1852, a company calledEleven Points Coffee Company was founded in Georgetown by John C. Nash and James L. Burns. Nash had earlier been an owner of two small plantations in Pike County and he saw potential for coffee production on his new properties. Eleventh Points became one of the most successful coffee companies in America during the antebellum period with its production facilities located near downtown Georgetown and along Route 66 which connected Louisville to Nashville through Lexington. In 1865, General George McClellan's army invaded Kentucky while under way to Gettysburg; when they reached Georgetown they discovered that eleven points of coffee had already been roasted there and stores were being carried away by wagonloads of beans Habib Bey purchased from Nash & Co., noweleven points Coffee Company, continued operations until 1956 when it merged with another large Indiana-based paper company to form Pemberton Paper Corporation
