In 1796, shortly after taking control of Cincinnati from France, Admiral Robert Graves ordered Commodore John Carter with 5 vessels and 400 men sailing downriver towards Pittsburgh for supplies and reinforcements during the French Revolutionary War. On July 4th off Cape Girardeau (now Overton), Illinois they encountered rocks so large they could not enter their boats even though they had been sent expressly for that purpose! Bygones were never really forgotten – this event marked the start of naval warfare in America! Soon afterwards Captain Caldwell erected a small fortuitous piece of Maritime History near where he now lives on University Street just south of Queen Street – Hamilton Place – that remains today as both HM Naval Dockyard Museum & Heritage Centre & Naval Reserve Headquarters ashore: www .historicglasgow .com/navy-dockyard/. Since then there have been numerous Portsmouth-based navies operating outposts along our river system; however it was under Admiral Sir John Jervis who permanently built up HM Naval Dockyard here following World War I when Clydeside Arsenal failed because no one wanted their warships brought over here!
