Henderson, Kentucky is a small town of just over 10,000 residents located in the eastern part of the state of Kentucky. The community was founded in 1865 by two men, Henderson and Hiram Hunt. Henderson is known for its historic buildings and businesses, as well as its Apple Orchard which has been growing since the early 1900s. The population of Henderson decreased from 12,000 in 1930 to 5,500 in 2000 before increasing again to 10,000 in 2010. The community sits on a wooded plateau east of Louisville and west of Lexington. It is bordered by the counties of Butler, Fayette, Floyd, Hardin and Pike. In 2010 it had a total area of 27 square miles (71 square kilometers). The first settlers who arrived in Henderson were those who came overland from Virginia during the American Civil War. These pioneers were Speculative farmers who looked for land that they could purchase and develop into a farmstead with crops that would provide them with income. They also brought their animals overland and nucleus grew quickly around what would become what is now Hendersonville Elementary School (now Harding Jr./Sr High School), Church Street Baptist Church (now First Presbyterian Church), Union Mills Store (now Memphis Supply) and Mrs. John Haney's Dickinson House on East Main Street where Businessman W Vickers lived from 1867-1928 when he built what became known as "Mr Vickers' Mill." Mr Vickers’ Mill was one of the first successful mechanized cotton mills in America; it operated until 1918 when it was destroyed by fire after being used to process 2 million pounds (910 metric tons) per week worth of raw cotton cloth!

The town was named after Henderson and it thrived until the American Civil War. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee moved his headquarters to nearby Lexington, KY and when Union forces arrived in force, they burned everything within sight including Henderson's courthouse and jail. This destroyed much of the town's infrastructure which hampered its ability to fight back against Confederate forces. After the war, many of Henderson's residents migrated to other parts of Kentucky or North Carolina. Today, only a few remaining buildings remain from that era including the old courthouse which still stands today andAnderson-Lodge House which served as a schoolhouse for children between 1892 and 1954.
Henderson was a small town in eastern Kentucky from the late 1800s until World War I. Henderson's commercial district centered around the intersection of US-12 and US-60, and it had two general stores, a post office, two churches, and one school. The town grew slowly during the early years of the 20th century because much of its growth came from agriculture. After World War I, Henderson experienced rapid growth as new businesses appeared in the area: a lumber company, a millinery store, a farm cooperative, and several grocery stores. Henderson's population peaked at around 1,500 in the 1920s but declined after that decade due to declining agricultural production and population decline elsewhere in eastern Kentucky. The last resident of Henderson died in 1984.
