From 1893 to 1912, Mr. John Hargrave ran a bakery in the business district of town. In 1912, Harry Miller opened his own café at 401 S 3rd St., which is now known as The HarryMiller Place.
In the early 1800s, Kentucky was a frontier state. The area that is now Kentucky was part of the Great Lakes region and was under French control. In 1792, when the United States invaded France, America gained control over Kentucky. The first U.S. Constitution prohibited slavery in the area, so slaveowners had to give up their slaves in order to become Americans. In 1801, when President James K. Polk sent a force into Kentucky to protect settlers from Native American raiders, many of whom were armed with bows and arrows, it became clear that America would not be relinquishing its claim to this area for long. As tensions mounted between the two countries over slavery and Indian land invasions, Congress passed a bill on February 14th, 1802 giving President James KS Polk exclusive rights to purchase all land east of the Mississippi River for $5 million dollars (this money was raised through exports). This gave rise to the phrase "The Foraker Bill." In 1808-9 General David Butler led an expedition against Fort Donelson in what is known as The Battle of Tullahoma Hill. The result set offa war that lasted three years and ended with Cherokee ceding most of their lands in present-day Tennessee to America; however, much of what remains today is within modern-dayKentucky borders
