Today, Independence is known for its dramatic landscape such as The Wilderness National Park and the city of Lexington. The first European settlers in Kentucky arrived in 1692. By 1800, about ninety percent of the population was Indian. In 1801, the United States acquired Kentucky from France following the War for Independence. Because it was part of Canada during that time, it took some time for the Americans to gain control over this strategically important state. In 1825, after years of struggles and bloodshed, John Marshall became the first U.S. Attorney General and began prosecuting cases against Native Americans living in Kentucky (the “Pioneer Settlers”). In 1830, President Andrew Jackson appointed James Ketchum as Commissioner of Indian Affairs because he felt that Indians were not contributing enough to society. Despite protests from many residents who saw this appointment as another example of white man abusing power at home - including Governor Hardin Wescott - Ketchum began implementing policies intended to assimilate natives into white culture by educating them in Christianity and enrolling them in government schools . This policy led to much anger among some native people who saw themselves as owning land that should rightfully be theirs only because they were born into it! One group led by John Cane started a campaign called “Give us our lands back” which helped Toombs win passage of the Indian Removal Act in 1830 with help from Representative James Kekalas (D-Ky.) Due largely to these policies implemented by Ketchum and others within Bureaucratic hands during this time period – especially during what is now known as The Century Of Progress – tensions between natives and whites continued to increase until violence erupted on August 15th 1845 when three men attemptedto rob a wagon filled with foodstuffs destined for local Native American tribes near Mount Vernon parish . A violent altercation ensued which left five Native Americans dead; one American killed outright infancy

In 1792, the first organized government in Kentucky was created when a group of men met at Frankfort to create the Kentucky Constitution. The convention voted to form a new state out of what is now western Kentucky and eastern Tennessee. The vote was not smooth, as there were several groups who wanted to keep their land and others who wanted it annexed into Virginia. As time passed, more and more people moved into this new state and soon Lexington became the largest city in the Union. Independence also played an important role in this story. In 1815, General James K. Polk married Lucy Lawless, daughter of Colonel Harmon Lawless of Independence (later KY’s governor). This event helped solidify Polk’s reputation as a powerful man in America. After the War of 1812 ended, settlers began moving into this area and by 1830 there were over 1,000 residents living in Independence alone! The city grew even further after the Civil War when KY became part of the United States! In 1865, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, most of Kentucky seceded from the Union and formed their own state called Confederate Kentucky! However, much like Independence itself – Liberty City was quickly reborn after its destruction during Reconstruction! Today Independence enjoys a rich history that continues to make it one of America’s great cities! It is home to some amazing architecture including some beautiful buildings such as Dragonfly Hall which overlooks downtown; Old State Capitol which is still used for meetings; and Lady Bird Johnson Presidential Library which contains many interesting artifacts from President Johnson’s time in office. Additionally, shopping can be found throughout downtown while also finding delicious restaurants options abound on both sides of Market Street between High Street and Elm streets!

On November 16th of that year, Kentucky became an independent state after a referendum vote.
