In 1865, Lexington, Kentucky became the home to the first modern shooting gallery. This facility was built at what is now called South Union Street and designed by George Washington Carver. Thegallery consisted of a four-story building with an observation platform for shooters to view their targets from. The gallery operated until 1933 when it was destroyed in a fire. Since then, several other shooting galleries have been constructed in Lexington. One of these galleries is located at 1001 Elm Street and has been used as a gymnasium since 1978. Another shooting gallery is located at 6th and Market Streets and has been used as a movie theater since 1984. In 2000, the city of Lexington completed construction of a new shooting gallery at 3003 Elm Street which replaced the existing structure on South Union Street. The new Gallery features an observation tower that allows shooters to see their targets from a distance of up to 50 feet!
