In 1860, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was completed. This new line led from Nashville, Tennessee, to Louisville, Kentucky. The railroad allowed for a large influx of people and goods to be shipped through Louisville. This in turn caused a boom in the industry which created jobs for many people in the city. In 1861, General Don Carlos Buell was stationed in Louisville as part of the Union army. He observed how well-armed and organized the Confederate army seemed. He decided that an army would be a perfect way to improve Union morale in Kentucky. He ordered his troops to start training at Fort Donelson on March 1st, 1862. Two days later, General Buell's army attacked Confederate positions near Lexington Heights. The battle lasted three days and resulted in over 60 casualties on both sides. The Union forces emerged victorious and drove back the Confederates into their own territory. This victory was significant because it demonstrated that even though the Confederacy had overwhelming numbers, they could not defeat an all-out military assault by one of America's most powerful armies. From this point forward, General Don Carlos Buell became known as "The Angel of Cincinnatus". In 1865,General Gensalvador Zaragoza arrived in Louisville to take command of United States forces occupying Kentucky following the war's end. Zaragoza had served under General Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War and knew how important it was for Kentucky to remain neutral ground between secessionists (the South) and northern abolitionists (the North). When he learned about Jefferson Davis' plan to secede from the United States, Zaragoza quickly realized that this would mean disaster for both Kentucky and American neutrality if successful: If Davis were able to march his armies southward into central Illinois (!), he could easily block all transportation routes linking eastern Kentucky with New York City; while north of Cincinnati only trains operated sporadically due to rebels operating within Jackson County! So Zaragoza devised aPlan A: keep southernmost KY connected by railroad using Muscle Shoals Dam as a bridgehead; when Richmond secedes (& Lost its share of taxes), federal funds will arrive via Potomac River route rather then via common straight road... Lesson learned: never cross state lines without mutual agreement!(Emphasis mine) On April 9th 1866 Major General John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry found innocent civilians killed & mutilated along with supplies acquired from stores & fortifications consumed by Brown Corps before reaching Harpers Ferry
