Madisonville, Kentucky is a small, unincorporated community in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Eastern Branch of the Big Sandy River. Madisonville was founded in 1820 by Anthony Veasey and named for James Madison, who served as President of the United States from 1797 to 1800. The first post office in Madisonville was established on July 1, 1827. In 1829 it was moved from its original site to what is now the corner of Second and Elm Streets. The town name originated with John Covington, who built a sawmill there in 1830 and named the stream after his home state of Virginia (and for which he paid). In 1840 Union troops burned down part of Madisonville while transporting supplies to Bowling Green during the Battle of Perrysburg. The burning caused great damage but no injuries to anyone within town and nothing ever came back again from that event. In 1865 General Forrest's forces destroyed some homes in town during their raid on nearby Louisville; this caused much outcry among those living there because they saw it as an attack on their way of life. However, Forrest actually lost many men during that raid and only looted what he could find rather than burn down any houses specifically targeting them - something historians have difficulty reconciling with today's perception of him as a ruthless conquerorpite

Madisonville is a small town located in the Campbell County district of Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. Madisonville was founded in 1827 by General John Caldwell and his family as Caldwells Station on the James River. The town name may be derived from "madison" meaning "fair" or "happy". The Caldwells were one of many families that came to Kentucky from Virginia in the early nineteenth century. GeneralJohnCaldwell (1785-1848) was an American Revolutionary War officer and landowner who played a major role in developing what is now Campbell County. He married Elizabeth Harrison (1792-1869), daughter of Governor Thomas Harrison of Virginia, and they moved to Kentucky where he began farming. In 1827, he purchased 7,000 acres (2 km²) along the James River from Major Hugh Fleming for $1 per acre ($40 per hectare). From this tract, Caldwell developed what is now Madisonville into a thriving community with two miles (3 km) of riverfront and over 100 homes. In 1830, General John Caldwell's son-in-law Colonel David Ritchie purchased 8500 acres (3 km²) adjoining Caldwell's original farmstead on the east side of the James River for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). This property became known as Ritchie Bottom because it lay between Ritchie Bottom Road on the south side of the river and present day White Hall Road on its north side. Colonel David Ritchie served as commander during both World Wars I and II and also helped create Covington University which stands today on his original land grant near Madisonville Speedway Stadium!
Madisonville was founded in 1814 by Kentucky pioneer James Dennison. The town is named for General Dearborn Madison, one of the founders of Kentucky. In 1859, the town became a county seat and was renamed Madisonville-Fayette County. It lost its county seat status in 1861 when Fayette County was created from parts of Shelby and Todd counties. The original courthouse still stands and is used as a museum today.
