Mayfield is a small town in Howard County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is named after Major General George Washington Mayfield and his family who settled in the area in 1827. The first recorded mention of Mayfield was in 1792 when Major General Washington Mayfield and his family were awarded 640 acres (24 km²) of land by Judge John Wilkinson for their military services during the French and Indian War. In 1827, General George Washington Mayfield purchased 780 acres (300 hectares) from James McCullough for $4,000 USD. He named the community after himself and his family with help from local residents. In 1915-16, Mayor Fenton Hines organized a campaign to rename all of Howard County as "Mayfield Township." However due to objections from some residents who felt they had been given too much land, including many within the current town limits - which are only 2 miles (3 km) wide - they successfully voted down the proposal by a wide margin. This opposition led to another effort to rename all of Howard County in 1916 which again failed when most residents objected to being called "Mayfield Township" without any clear boundaries or benefits associated with it beyond simply geographical significance. However on January 10th, 1921 – just two years after mayor Hines' original attempt – a resolution was passed through the township board proposing that "the name 'MayFIELD' be used as an alternate name forHoward County until such time that an official change can be made thereto." The vote result indicated widespread support for this proposal and it has been used continuously ever since; even though there have been several changes to county boundaries over time (including its current size). The current designation as "MayFIELD" comes about because on November 3rd, 1927 – less than two months after General Washington's purchase of property here – trustees voted unanimously to change the name of Lexington-Fayette Airport from "Lexington Municipal Airport" to "George Washington Memorial Airport". At that time there were still three other airports within Louisville proper: Harrodsburg Municipal Airport (now Oldham County airport), Armstrong University Airport (now US Airways Center), andJefferson Community Hospital Airport which had both been originally designated "Lexington Municipal Airport". The decision not only marked an important distinction between Lexington-Fayette Airport and these other three airports but also helped solidify Mayfield's status as one of eastern Kentucky's leading aviation towns thanks largely to its long history as home to GWRA operations followed by subsequent expansions at LCHD/US Airways Center/Armstrong University Aircraft Maintenance hangar etc.. In addition Wacoal Airlines operated out of GWRA during its early days before moving into their present day facility at KYLEX/NAPA Regional Jetport near Louisville International airport.. Today GWRA remains one of eastern Kentucky’s most important aviation attractions with numerous visitors each year making multiple flights throughout different periods throughout different days & seasons

Mayfield, Kentucky is a small town located in the southeast corner of Johnson County, Kentucky. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The name may come from a place called "Mayfield" on an early map of the area. The first settlement in what is now Mayfield was founded by Captain John Mayfield and his family in 1792. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Ohio River and named their settlement after Mayfield's father. Captain John and his family were among the original settlers who created this region around what is now Louisville, Kentucky. Over time, other families also moved to these parts and soon there were several settlements scattered around central Johnson County - including present-day Mayfield. A post office called Mayfield was established in 1827, but it was discontinued operation in 1828. A new post office called Lexington was established in 1829, but it too ceased operations two years later. In 1830, a store and wagon road known as Cedar Fork Road began serving what is now MayFIELD from near Antelope Springs downstream to where it crossed the Forks ofthe river at present day West Greenbush Road. This road served as a main transportation artery for early settlers living in this area because there wasn't any existing routes between central Johnson County and eastern Jefferson County until much later when roads were built by both sides to connect their respective areas during the late 1800s and early 1900s! In 1834, Captain John's son James bought land east of Lexington on which he erected a large frame house which still stands today as one of many classic examples remaining from that period in town history. James' son George purchased additional land east of Lexington shortly thereafter which would become known as Hilltop Estate; this acreage would be home to some of earliest white farming communities in this part of KY! It wasn't until 1862 that another permanent settler arrived to help improve life hereabouts - Drayton Kirby! He purchased 640 acres east OF Lexington along with several buildings/crops including a mill (now destroyed) used for grinding corn into meal for local consumption back then! Drayton would continue farmsteading here until his death less than five years later – just prior to Louisville becoming an incorporated city! Captain John's House still standing today within downtown MAYFIELD
