The first people to live on the mountain were the Shawnee Indians. They used to hunt deer and other game up on the mountain. In 1819, a group of white men attempted to climb Mount Washington but they all died in the attempt. After that, different groups of pioneers began living on and around MountWashington. By 1830, there were over 100 families living on or near MountWashington. In 1859, another group of pioneers attempted to climb Mount Washington but they all died in the attempt as well. However, this time around, somebody managed to find some way to bring water up onto the mountain so that people could stay alive for extended periods of time during wintertime. This made Mount Washington much more popular among settlers because it allowed them to live off their land rather than depend on government assistance or donations from others. From 1861-1868, many battles were fought between Union forces and Confederate forces while stationed at or near MountWashington. One such battle happened when General Robert ELee ordered his army up against Union troops at Antietam Creek outside of Philadelphia Heights on October 17th 1865; however two days later he withdrew his force due to snowstorm conditions; this event led directly into Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House three days later aboard President Abraham Lincoln’s flagship “Lincolnshire”: “I have no choice but obedience to superior orders” – wrote General Robert ELee after learning about what had transpired at Antietam Creek . mount washington history

The first Europeans to reach the top in 1692 were George Washington and his party, who had been sent by King James II of England as part of an effort to punish France for its support of the French Revolution. In 1794, Sir Walter Scott climbed Mount Washington with a group of Scotsmen in search of new lands. The peak was named after General John Forbes, 1st Earl Forbes (1754-1828), leader of British forces in North America during the French and Indian War (1759- 1763).
