Nicholasville is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette Urban Cluster. The first settlement in Nicholasville was made on the banks of the Little Kanawha River near present-day Nicholasville proper in 1792 by two families from Virginia and their four children. The town was named for Colonel Nicholas Heninger, a Revolutionary War veteran and later justice of the peace in KY. The first stores were built around 1815 by farmers who had to drive horses and buggies over rough ground to get to their goods. By 1860, Nicholsville had eighty residents and six businesses. In 1868, General John Custer's column marched through Nicholasville during his campaign against Native American forces known as "the Great Sioux Campaign." After the battle at Little Big Horn, many soldiers camped en route to Fort Hays in Kansas where they taught school for three weeks before returning home. Some of these soldiers brought back jars of pickled buffalo meat which became popular among local citizens. In 1876, Nicholsville became one of thirty towns organized within Hardin County when that county was created from parts of Fayette and Hopkins counties. Three years later it joined with Trimble Township to form what is now called "Logan Circle". In 1908 Nicholsville lost its independent status whenHardin County united with neighboring Trimble Township to create Logan Circle coterminous with current day NicholasVILLE proper
