It was founded by James Bowie in 1802 as a trading post on the Harlan River. Paducah became an important transportation center during the 19th century because it served as a gateway to what is now West Virginia and North Carolina. The city was often called "The Gateway to the Bible Belt." In 1865, General Robert E. Lee's army passed through Paducah on its way to help defeat Confederate General Stonewall Jackson at Appomattox Court House. In 1875, Paducah became a consolidated territory of Kentucky and Tennessee when that state was created from parts of both Virgina and Tennessee. The city's first mayor was John Auld. In 1907, the Louisville & Nashville Railroad donated land for a new station in Paducah which would become one of the most important stations on that railway. That year also saw the opening of Paducah's first ever store - The First National Bank - located at 8 South Market Street (now 3rd Street). During World War II, many soldiers who had fought in Europe were brought back to America and settled in Paducah where they built bases such as Camp Grant which housed over 47000 troops during World War II. Afterward, many left for other countries but some continued living in town until their deaths or migration out of rural areas began occurring again beginning around 2000%. The City Council approved plans for a new downtown development adjacent to old downtown which will include approximately 350 apartments with hotel rooms attached thereto along with retail space inside and out including two movie theaters; restaurants; nightlife; office space; and housing units for local families with children under 12 years old being available for purchase once construction begins later this year pending City approvals from HUD/FEMA/NRA etc... finally we have something close enough so people can actually live closer together without having all these kids running around trying to get into everything
