The Magas started out small, roasting 2 pounds of beans per week for their local grocery store. In 1997, they opened their first shop in downtown Richmond. Richmond, Kentucky is a city in and the county seat of Richmond County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 61,813 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in both Richmond and Pike Counties. The metropolitan area has a population of over 100,000 people and is home to four universities: Western Kentucky University (WKU), Murray State University (MSU), Belmont Hill College (BHC) and Northern Kentucky University (NNU). The first Europeans to visit what is now Richmond were French fur traders travelling through southern Ohio in 1690-91. A Jesuit mission had been founded there in 1707 by Father Pierre de la Salle. After Reconstruction Richmond reverted to Confederate control until May 8, 1971 when it became an open-air museum governed by the National Park Service with jurisdiction over all US national monuments except Mount Rushmore National Monument because that monument falls within Smithsonian's Bureau of Land Management jurisdiction. In 1805 James Kenedy built his plantation on present day Eastern Boulevard between Uptown Drive and York Road east of downtown Richmond as one step towards becoming a slave trader and owner himself. By 1800 Kenedy had become one of "the wealthiest planters in Virginia." His slaves were brought from Africa for labor on his plantations; many died before reaching adulthood because they were not well nourished or treated adequately while living off their master's bounty. One such slaveowner who made significant contributions to Virginian society was James Kenedy II who provided education for his enslaved Africans ; he also helped found Trinity Episcopal Church which still stands today as oneof Richmond's most important landmarks This article does not mention any other Freeborns who contributed significantly to early Richmond history either
