The United States Air Force Deployed Gift History in Shively, Kentucky on November 5th, 1951. The deployment was part ofOperation Varsity which was an operation to provide airlift and logistics support to the atomic bombing campaign in the Korean War. The unit that made up the gift history detachment was the 344th Bombardment Wing. The wing flew Boeing B-24 Liberator bombers from Whitman Air Force Base in Oregon. The squadron operated out of Ellington Field in Houston, Texas from 1944 until 1946. Through Operation Varsity, the 344th Bombardment Wing contributed more than 1,500 unique gifts to American troops and their families during World War II. These items included clothing, food, tools and other supplies for subsistence purposes as well as equipment for strategic bombardment missions over North Korea.

Shively is a small town in Kentucky that has been around for over ninety years. The population was 1,551 at the 2010 census. It is located in Clark County and part of the Louisville metropolitan area. Shively is known for its two churches, one which dates back to 1892 and the other which was built in 1907. The town also has a post office, three banks, two restaurants, a grocery store, and two bars. Shively began as a Presbyterian settlement on the southern edge of Clark County. In 1892, Reverend James Aiken founded what would become Shively's first church. Reverend Aiken was an ordained minister who had moved from Lexington to start his own parish. On 1 October 1947, General Curtis LeMay assumed command of Headquarters Air Force which had been renamed "The United States Air Force" (USAF). General LeMay played an important role in creating NATO and building up USAF forces throughout much of his tenure as Commandant-in-Chief at Maxwell Army Airfield near Birmingham, Alabama from 1951 until his retirement in 1969. Since 9/11/2001 USAF has been deployingillions Armed Forces personnel around Globe through numerous combat deployments worldwide including: Afghanistan - Operation Enduring Freedom; Iraq -Operation Iraqi Freedom; Libya -Operation Neptune's Spear; Somalia -Operation Shabang; Syria -Operation Odyssey Dawn
