The history of the St. Matthews Shooter Gift Shop began in 1969 when, in an effort to support local shooting sports, the town's Chamber of Commerce created a gift shop for members of its shooting community. The shop was open Monday-Saturday from 9am-6pm and offered limited inventory but an extensive selection of firearms and accessories. Through the years, the store has been host to many famous shooters including Donny Walters, Larry King, Bobby Layne and many more. In 2013, the store closed its doors after 50 years in business; however, it is still in use by members of the shooting community who come to enjoy their favorite hobby at one of Kentucky's oldest gun stores.

It was founded in 1815 by General David Wilkinson, who named it for his friend, Saint Matthews, a bishop in Jerusalem. The population of St. Matthews grew rapidly during the early 1800s; by 1820, it had reached over 1,000 people. The town became a busy commercial center and also developed into a major agricultural community; within thirty years of its founding, St. Matthews had become one of the largest cotton-growing areas in America. In addition to its importance as an agricultural center and commerce hub, St. Matthews also served as a key military depot during both the American Civil War (1861-1865) and World War I (1914-1918). After the war ended, however, economic prosperity declined and the town began to decline; by 1980, it was almost entirelyffunctionless due to heavy investment from outside sources and declining populations statewide. However, recent revitalization efforts have reversed this trend and recentlyStMatthews has regained some significant aspects of its former glory: most notably its status as a popular tourist destination for both locals and visitors alike.

St. Matthews was founded in 1795 by the Reverend John Cunningham and his wife, Cathernia. The Cunninghams were Scottish immigrants who arrived in Kentucky in 1793. They started a small Baptist Chapel on the side of a hill near what is now downtown St. Matthews. The chapel served as a place for people to worship and learn about Christianity. In 1837, Reverend James Kline established a school in the chapel which became one of the most successful schools in Kentucky. In 1875, St. Matthews was renamed to honor Reverend James Atherton, an Episcopal priest who had helped lead the town into existence as a commercial center after its incorporation as a city in 1873. From 1903 until his death in 1938, Rev Mr Atherton was also pastor of All Souls Church located adjacent to the old school building on Third Street which still remains standing today (accessed through the alley between Second and Third Streets). After Rev Atherton's death, many people donated land around All SoulsChurch so that it could be developed into an inner-city high-rise apartment complex called "Atherton Place". However, due to zoning regulations at that time, this project failed to come to fruition and only ended up costing $10 million more than anticipated! Today, Saint Matthews is known for its beautiful churches and preserves its rich history even though much has changed since its founding day. One of the most well-known landmarks from early St Matthias days is The Blacksmith Shop where blacksmiths used to make items such as horseshoes and saddles from locally sourced materials such as tree bark and cow dung. Today there are several shops open throughout town specializing in various crafts including pottery making; quilting; weaving; metalworking; woodworking; cake decoration (even having their own bake shop); gardening; cookery classes (including vegan cooking courses); dog walking tours (available daily during daylight hours or by appointment); concerts each summertime featuring local artistsfolk playing music all night long at venues along Main Street including two main stages with soundproofing so you can enjoy live music without worrying about noise pollution.;and kayaking/canoeing/diving/fishing trips out on Duck Creek every other Saturday morning during early season when it’s low water levels so you can access some great fishing spots right next door! There’s something for everyone here! Although much has changed since St Matthias days like becoming an inner city suburb instead of being surrounded by farmland like it once was.,much has stayed constant such as this rich history & culture which continues to keep things interesting for locals & visitors alike!!
The first settlement in what is now St. Matthews, Kentucky was made by the group of Methodist preachers led by Alexander Henderson in 1819. The community soon became a center for religious activity, with churches and schools dotting the landscape. By 1830, the town had a population of about 100 people and was struggling to support itself. However, thanks to the efforts of local entrepreneur James Mays, who built a flour mill in the town and started marketing it as a place to buy goods from farmers in surrounding counties, St. Matthews began to prosper over time. In 1844, Mays donated land near the future site of Louisville for a public square that would serve as an important commercial and social center for the area. The square still stands today and is used as a civic space today.
