Abbeville, Louisiana is a town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to live in Abbeville were French colonists who landed on the current site of the town in 1718. They named it "Aubigne" after Jean-Jacques Aubrey, a French officer and explorer who had explored Canada and parts of South America. A post office was established in 1810, but no residents moved to Abbeville until 1824 when General James K. Polk built an Army Fort here for use as a supply depot during the Mexican–American War. In 1850, Abbeville became one of nine towns incorporated into New Orleans County through an act of the legislature; it remained so until Reconstruction Period (1868-1912). In 1853, Isaac Stevens opened what is now known as Stevens Drug Store on State Street near Market Street in downtown Abbeville; Stevens became one of its earliest customers and remains one of its longest-standing businesses today. In 1893 he donated land to build what is now First Baptist Church; construction began that year and finished two years later. The first services were held at what is now First Baptist Church on October 9th, 1893. Abbeville, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous parish in Louisiana and the second most populous parish after New Orleans. The town is located on the south bank of the Mississippi River near its confluence with Lake Pontchartrain. The history of Abbeville dates back to 1718 when Father Jacques Marquette and his party explored what is now east-central Louisiana. They called this area La Nouvelle Ile (New Island). In 1804, General James K. Polk moved Ulysses S. Grant's army from Vicksburg to this location during the American Civil War as a strategic offensive against Antonio López de Santa Anna's Mexican forces; part of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia In 1836, Captain John Smith discovered oil wells in what is now Abbeville while exploring for oil northwest of Baton Rouge on behalf of Nicholas Biddleheimer & Company of Philadelphia. With help from local farmers and drilling rigs owned by Matson Navigation Company president George Brown, exploration further developed this new business opportunity until 1861 when it came to an abrupt end due to Union military occupation following Mobile Bayou Campaigns led by Admiral David Farragut; Abbeville became part of Jackson County which also included nearby Monroe and Chalmette counties seat until 1850 when they were combined with Jefferson Parish into present day Jefferson Parish In 1851, Ayer County was organized from parts of Jackson and Jefferson Parishes; it included much land adjacent to Abbeville including portions that are now St Tammany Parish Oil production resumed in early 1920s although it ended abruptly again because prices were too high In 1925, two brothers named Earl Harvey started manufacturing tractors here - one at Stagecoach Motors Inc., one at Harvey Brothers Machine Shop Incorporated which later merged with their father's company Matson Navigation Company ; Harvey tractors continued being made here until 1959 After World War II general store operators began opening up businesses such as grocery stores (J&L Grocery) pet stores (Paws & Potatoes), hardware stores (Hawkeye Hardware), boat dealers/paddleboats (Reed Boat Sales), welding shops (Welding Supply Co.) and other related businesses . This growth was gradually halted by larger companies who bought up most small businesses before they closed down or went out of business . By 1960 there were only 13 functioning businesses left in town ; however some have reopened since then like J&L Grocery which has been open since 1978 and Paws & Potatoes which has been open since 2006
In 1763, the Louisiana Purchase was made by France and Spain. The area that is now Abbeville was part of what was known as Spanish Louisiana. It was ceded to France in 1803. In 1814, Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States and ordered the transfer of all American slaves to Africa. The white population in Spanish Louisiana dwindled until it disappeared in 1900 when the area became part of New Orleans.
