As the years passed, other Italians began opening their own cafés throughout Alexandria. One such cafe was La Cascina, which operated from 1901 to 1914. This café became known for its delicious fresh-ground coffee and innovative advertising techniques which featured slogans such as “Coffee Without Pains” and “Italian Breakfast at Home.” La Cascina also served magnificent espresso drinks called Lungomare (Luncheon Mare). In 1916, Antonio Manzoni established his own roastery and café on Fourteenth Street in downtown Alexandria. Manzoni’s business quickly grew into one of the most successfulartisan cafes in town. He soon started exporting his coffee to other parts of America and Europe under the name Manzoni Coffee Company. His enterprise continued to grow until it produced over 1 million cups of fresh-ground coffee each year! The decline began with the arrival of white settlers who killed most of the local Native American culture before moving on to other parts of Louisiana. In 1861 when Union troops arrived in Louisiana to fight for the Confederacy against Confederate troops under General Robert E Lee, Alexandria became one of their first stops after arriving from Mississippi. By 1865 it had also become an important port for trade with Mobile and points north while continuing to decline until it closed its doors completely in 2000 due to economic recession and lack of support from government officials. Despite this decline, Alexandria still retains some symbols and attractions that are unique to its history; such as its restored slave quarters which can be visited during regular business hours or during special events such as block parties where participants dress up like slaves and dancehall style music is played outdoors.
