The history of policing in Alexandria, Louisiana, is reflective of the community it serves. In 1881, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Covington purchased a small piece of land south of the city limits and began to build a police department. The first officers were hired in 1882. The department was originally called the Alexandria Police Department and served as an adjunct to the City Marshal’s office. It relocated to its current location on State Street in 1894. In 1922, the Alexandria Police Department became a law enforcement agency within the newly created Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office. The department uniform was designed by Captain John Waddell and cost $1,500. On October 1, 1923, it was announced that Captain Waddell had resigned because he could not find an appropriate replacement for him within the sheriff’s office or within the Alexandrian Police Department. He was succeeded by Captains Harry Sperling and Frank Goleno who served until 1948 when they both left for other positions within Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office. On July 1, 1954, Lieutenant Colonel James Aucharick assumed command of the Alexandria Police Department from Captain Harry Sperling who had retired due to ill health. Aucharick served until his retirement on September 30, 1957 which also marked the end of captaincy forAlexandria PD; this position has been held by lieutenant colonel ever since (except for interim periods). Aucharick is credited with creating daytime patrols in Alexandria which helped reduce crime rates during this time period while also increasing public safetyawareness throughout Alexandra city Limits Since then there have been many changes/ innovations including installing new technology such as Body-worn Cameras (BWC) which have allowed us to improve interactions between citizens and our police officers Recently we have implemented new software programs that allow us to track officer performance across different areas such as arrests/charges etc
