In 2000, local resident Estelle McMillin became the first woman to ever be elected Mayor of Baker by popular vote when she won against incumbent Lamar Hill Jr.. As of 2019, McMillin is serving her third term as Mayor after winning reelection last year despite being facing numerous allegations of fraud during her time as Mayor including accepting bribes from contractors working on city projects while she was still employed by them - allegations that were later proven true .
