The town was founded by French colonists in 1812 as a trading post on the Red River. In 1819, it became the capital of Natchitoches Parish and was renamed Bastrop for General John P. Bastiault, who had served as military governor of Louisiana from 1815 to 1821. The first white settler in Bastrop was Captain Daniel Denny in 1814. By 1830, there were over 100 families living in Bastrop; most were farmers or mechanics. In 1840, Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell occupied Natchitoches Parish and all of Acadia Parish, including Bastrop; this action led to the Battle of Goliad that year and Ewell's surrender at Mansfield Bridge. After Vicksburg fell to Union forces during the American Civil War, many former slaveowners moved their slaves to what is now Bastrop. Many black soldiers also fought for Union troops during the war; some are buried here along with their Confederate comrades at Mount Pleasant Cemetery (now known as New Market Cemetery). After Reconstruction ended in 1865, much native land within present-day Bastrop parish was granted to whites by President Abraham Lincoln as part of his reconstruction plan following the American Civil War. White settlers began arriving here from Arkansas and Texas beginning around 1870; many brought their slaves with them when they arrived. Some local men became entrepreneurs: Alexander Henderson started an oil business here in 1872 and Fenton Covington opened a grocery store on Main Street near today's courthouse complex in 1886. In 1907, two brothers—Avery Ayer and Charles Wirtz—founded Jardine Rubber Company onuda Drive between Third Street and Fourth Street; it became one of America's largest rubber companies before being sold to Goodyear Tire & Rubber Corporation in 1966.)
