Bastrop is a small town in the parish of Bastrop, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands metropolitan area. Bastrop was founded in 1849 by planters from Georgia and Alabama who came to help settle land that had been purchased by General Sam Houston and his forces during the Mexican-American War. When Texas became an independent republic in 1845, Bastrop became its capital. The town's growth followed a pattern seen throughout south Louisiana: settlers descended from slaveowners brought over as slaves started their own families and businesses; they built homes with money they earned selling goods and services to other farmers and ranchers; later generations grew crops and raised livestock for meat or milk while also serving as policemen, firefighters, teachers, ministers, doctors, dentists and more. During World War II, Bastrop played a significant role in the Battle of Iwo Jima where its military men—among them Sgt. Johnnie Johnston—helped lead Navy troops against Japan's numerically superior Imperial Japanese Army force. After the war ended in 1945, many people moved out of Bastrop into new neighborhoods established outside of town such as Baytown (later renamed Austin) and Clear Lake (later renamed Cypress). Bastrop gradually regained some of its former population after most residents left for good during the 1990s due to costal advances made by Hurricane Katrina which destroyed much of southern Louisiana including Bastrop. In recent years there has been renewed interest in returning to full-time habitation within limits set by local zoning ordinances enacted following Hurricane Mitch which resulted in house values dropping as low as $10 per square foot near downtown Bastrop.
