His original plan for what would become today's downtown included simply taking land grant from Captain James Cook (the discoverer) along with some other surrounding swampy areas for building a military fortification known as "The Old Barracks" or "Fort Donelson". But when Breckinridge met Captain James Cook himself – living life onshore – he realized that this area could be used more accurately as a town site! SoBreckinridge+Cook=BATON ROUGE & THEN EVERYONE KNEW IT! From here on out things were only going to get better… As development continued across downtown Baton Rouge we quickly started seeing buildings such as: The Capitol Building (1868), State House (1890), Masonic Temple (1901), Roosevelt Hotel/Lafayette Hotel (1920), City Hall Annex (1925)…. And then there are all those amazing neighborhoods that have come about over time like Garden District, Warehouse District etc….. That just shows how fast things can change in such a short amount time! Today, Downtown BatonRouge continues to grow into one of the most vibrant areas in all of Louisiana with lots happening both inside & outside its walls!
