Bogalusa was founded by French colonists in 1718 as a trading post on the banks of the Plaquemine River. The town was named for François de Bourgogne, Count of Bogalusa. Bogalusa became an important cotton center in the antebellum period and saw rapid growth during the 19th century when it became known as "the most productive cotton plantation in America." However, Bogalusa's prosperity ended during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. After years of decline, production resumed in the early 20th century but declined again during World War II because of its proximity to Germany and Japan. In recent decades, Bogalusa has seen revitalization with a focus on arts and culture. In 2013, Mayor Rick Allender dedicated Bogalusa's newest park - called Lafayette Park - to Drayton Keyes McAdoo who had been its namesake since 1954 when he donated land to help revive local economy after his death from natural causes at age 89%. In 2016, Mayor Allender announced that he would not seek reelection due to health concerns; however, he remains active politically and continues to support efforts to revive Bogalus
