Bogalusa is a small town located in the parish of Nicholls in the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry. The population was 2,663 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge–New Orleans Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by French colonists in 1784 as a trading post on an island in Lake Pontchartrain. The name derived from "Bogue" or "boguie" meaning "to make goods available for sale." In 1814, Bogalusa became the capital of Claiborne Parish after its creation from parts of Ville Platte and Terrebonne parishes. By 1828, Bogalusa had become a center for cotton production due to its location on the Mississippi River floodplain where it could dry out during periods of high water. The town's growth led to its annexation by New Orleans in 1829. In 1870, Bogalusa acquired land east of I-10 that served as its original community parkland. Today, this area houses Bogalusa High School and several businesses including Nardi's Italian Grill & Pasta Shop, Hogback Coffee House & Cafe, and Artisan Bakehouse (formerly known as Gossamer Cakes). On October 15, 1937 Hurricane Betsy struck Bogalusa with winds topping 125 mph (185 km/h). A tree fell within one mile (1.6 km) of City Hall while buildings were being damaged or destroyed throughout much of downtown; only defensive barriers saved many residents from becoming casualties or homeless when flooding followed weeks later. Bogalusa is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,604 at the 2000 census. The name Bogalusa comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "lake of fish" or "pool of water." The first Europeans to visit Bogalusa were the Spanish in 1521 when they discovered a saltpeter mine there. In 1763, French explorer and soldier La Salle named the place after François de Bourgogne, marquis de Montcalm. The area became part of Orleans Parish after it was land grants from France to treaties between the United States and Spain during the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The town site was surveyed by Captain James Kenedy on April 20, 1813 and he called it New Orleans because he had just arrived from England as colonel commandant of Fort St. Philip on that same day. On July 1, 1814 Nicolás De Soto discovered a saltpeter mine at Bogue Creek near present-day Bogalusa Street and Park Avenue. On October 19, 1818 General James Kenedy surrendered his forces at Baton Rouge to Governor John Crainer after they had failed to capture Mobile Bay during Mr Price's Invasion of Alabama & Mississippi). With this event came plans for organized development within what would become known as Old Orleans Parish with Bogalusa being one of its earliest planned communities - although no buildings were actually erected until well into the 1830s! In 1827 Lafayette built La Salle Chapel on what is now Second Street in downtown Bogalusa which served as a parish church until 1840 when Lafayettes death caused an interruption in religious services throughout much of New Orleans parish (and ultimately Louisiana) due to political reasons surrounding Ville Platte massacre that year! At various points over time different denominations offered their services here includingMethodist Episcopalians who established their own congregation here in 1863; German Baptists who began serving local congregations in 1865; Congregationalists who moved into what would become known as Park Avenue around 1870-71; Presbyterians who started service here around 1880 before moving away following Reconstruction; Irish Catholic nuns opened Our Lady Of Good Counsel Church located adjacent to City Hall shortly thereafter which functioned as both a school and parochial hospital until World War II when all conventual schools closed except for Our Lady Of Good Counsel which reopened as Holy Cross School later that decade! In 1888 results from the Louisiana state constitutional convention resulted in reformation of several aspects of government including education within municipal boundaries leading eventually to creation not only of Acadiana but also Tangipahoa Parishes following referendum held on November 3rd subsequent thereto calling for establishment therein bylaws providing for corporate governance model similar thereto existing within Mostallianna Parish prior thereto); incorporation/establishmentof Zouavettes Brewery Company Limited Partnership effective January 1st 1889 pursuant thereto) led ultimately to establishment herein today - yet another reminder that even though life moves forward it never really stops...

The first store in Bogalusa opened in 1796. In 1814, Bogalusa became a parish seat and remained so until 1868 when it became an independent municipality. In 1815, French settlers arrived in Louisiana and began to move into what is now Jefferson Parish. They named their new settlement after Jean Baptiste de la Salle, who had explored the area during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte. La Salle had been sent to survey Louisiana for France after his successful expedition against Mexico in 1807. When he reached Bogalusa, he called it Bogueuse because of its abundance of wooded land and warm climate.
