The BOSSIER CITY COAST GUARD, Inc. was organized on January 3, 1915 as an auxiliary organization of the LOUISIANA STATE GAS AND ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE. In 1916, the Coast Guard Auxiliary became a full-fledged branch of the Louisiana State Police and was redesignated as the BOSSIER CITY COAST GUARD, Inc. On July 1, 1951, the name change to Bossier City Coast Guard District No. 2 and on December 5, 1966 to Bossier City Coast Guard District No. 3. The present day name is based upon its history and mission which are consistent with that of predecessor organizations; namely: “to protect life and property within our jurisdiction by providing security for coastal communities and waters” (Bossoire City Municipal Council Declaration #2). The early years of coast guard service in Bossier City were difficult because there were no facilities or personnel available to provide patrol services along Louisiana’s coastline. However, through hard work and dedication by dedicated individuals who volunteered their time and resources, the Coast Guard has made a significant impact in helping to keep our community safe from harm both during peacetime and during times of crisis. It is through these efforts that we have been able to make a positive contribution to the economy of Bossier City while also providing assistance to local citizens when needed most. In 1919, following World War I when sea levels began rising due to climate change caused by factors such as warring nationships stationed off Louisiana's coastlines), Congress passed legislation authorizing Operation Neptune’s Spear which focused on saving lives at sea using all means necessary including gunboats and planes equipped with torpedoes and rockets against enemy warships afloat or anchored offshore.]]! This important event helped establishLouisiana’s coastline as onestop shop for fishermen looking for food supplies unavailable anywhere else in the state]! In 1925],]!, Operation Market Garden resulted in fourteen merchant vessels being sunk by gunfire at Steak Island aided by helicopters from then Lieutenant Colonel David Jantz [later Commandant of Marine Corps Reserve Fleet Headquarters Camp Lejeune]!]! Today we remember this successful operation with two annual fundraising events honoring those who gave their lives protecting Louisianans from harm -Operation Neptune's Spear Memorial Festival & Commander David Jantz Memorial Day Parade.]]! From 1870 to 1940, the Coast Guard was headquartered in Bossier City. The earliest coast guard gift came from Captain John B. Hebert of the Louisiana Navy in 1870. He donated a cannon and ammunition for use by the Coast Guard. In 1915, Captain Elisha J. King donated a tugboat and other supplies to be used by the Coast Guard during World War I. In 1937, captain Charles W. Bowen donated a motorboat and other supplies to be used by the Coast Guard during World War II. In 1941, Captain Samuel L Hunt gifted two lifeboats and two launches to the Coast Guard for use during Hurricane Katrina; these gifts are still in use today as part of the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office's lifesaving program.
