Crowley, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. Crowley served as the capital of the former Spanish territory of Louisiana from 1805 to 1814 and was briefly located in Rapides Parish before moving to Jefferson Parish in 1821. The community was named for John Crowley, an American merchant who had purchased land here in 1786. In 1830, Crowley became the seat of government for all of Jefferson Parish when Orleans Parish was split into two parts. The town began as a small farming community near the present-day intersection of I-10 and US 30/US 281 on the banks of Red River. A sawmill founded by Colonel Samuel Morse around 1800 helped create the town's first industry; Crowley manufactured cotton goods until ceasing operations in 1865. By 1840, however, cotton production had ceased altogether and only a few scattered businesses remained intown by 1870. During World War II, Crowley played an important role as one of several military base camps used by both Allied and Axis forces during World War II. In recent years, many businesses have closed or been acquired by larger companies since then (most notably Tyson Foods). However, some residents remain active within local government and continue to enjoy its history and culture.
Crowley was founded in 1836 by John Crowley and his wife Anna. The town was named for John, the father of Anna and the grandfather of Crowley's wife. The first post office in Crowley was established in 1837. In 1838, a mill was built on the banks of the Vermilion River. The mill did not start operating until after John Crowley died in 1848. In 1860, a store and hotel were built in Crowley. The store closed in 1865, but the hotel continued to operate until it burned down in 1895. A new hotel was built on the same site in 1897, and it remains operational today as part of theouxiana State Fairgrounds complex.
