Denham Springs is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Denham Springs post office opened in 1881 and closed in 1957. The first settler in Denham Springs was John A. McGilligan. The original town site was on the north side of Bayou Teche near what is now Elysian Fields Boulevard. In 1909, businessmen Manton Sweeny and Wernher Kapp bought land east of the bayou for a new townsite. They named their new town Denham Springs after their relative, General James Denham, who served as Commandant of Police for much of the early 1800s in Louisiana and West Texas (now Oklahoma). In 1951, when Lafitte Parish became organized into many parishes, Denham Springs was included within St Bernard Parish. Today it remains an unincorporated community within Jefferson Parish with its own government and school system; however, it does have some continuity with its Lafitte parish counterpart through common cultural experiences and activities such as annual carnivals/fairs that are held there each July 4th weekend
