The community was founded in 1858 by Captain John Denham and his family as a station on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad. It became an incorporated village in 1907. The town was named after General James Denham, who served as military governor of Louisiana from 1837 to 1840. Denham Springs has a post office with ZIP code 77512. The Gadsden Museum of Art is located in the village and features works by local artists including DonatellO Salvatore, Alice Noland and Pearl Buck.

Coffee was first brewed for use as an alcoholic drink in India in the 6th century BC. Coffee beans were brought to Europe by Italian traders in the 16th century. The first recorded reference to coffee as a beverage was made in 1553 AD when Giovanni Boccaccio wrote De arte della bodega (Of Art of Brewing). Coffee began being used as a battlefield stimulant during World War II. During the war, Allied forces discovered that coffee could be used to make grenades and other explosives more stable and effective. Coffee also proved helpful in providing energy on battlefields where soldiers were deprived of food or water.

Denham Springs is located in the parish of Bossier, Louisiana. The population was 1,851 at the 2000 census. Denham Springs was founded by Captain John Denham in 1811 as a farmstead on the banks of the Red River. The town was named for Captain Denham's wife, Deborah.Captain Denham and his family managed to keep their holdings until 1830 when they sold it to General James Kenedy for $6,000. In 1834, General Kenedy moved his headquarters from Alexandria to Denham Springs where he planned to build a new military post. However, due to a lack of land and construction delays, the post never materialized and all that exists today are some foundations and an old fortification wall. In 1837-1838 some Frenchmen settled in what is now called "The Gables" near present day I-10 and US 61 which led to the name of "Denham Springs." By 1840 there were over 100 residents living here including 30 slaves who worked on Colonel Edwin Lamon's cotton plantation. When white men began moving into this area after picking cotton during the War Betweenthe States (1861-1865), they brought with them their culture and attitudes which negatively affected black people living here. After Reconstruction (1868-1912), many African Americans left this area because they could not find work or because they did not want to be associated with white people again. The first school in Denham Springs opened in 1864 underprivileged children from nearby Lafourche Parish were educated here while working on Mr. Fenton's slave plantation upriver along LA 387 north of present day Lafayette Parish). In 1895 Drs JH Baker & RL Hinton organized local teachers into one teacher’s union so that better benefits could be provided for these students; however this effort failed when school board members refused to recognize it as an official union! Denham Springs was founded in 1827 by John Denham and his wife, Sarah. The town got its name from the Denham Springs Mining District, which was located in the town. The mines were worked by local miners and their families until the late 1800s. In 1892, the first post office was established in Denham Springs. The community experienced growth during World War II as troops moved into nearby Alexandria to fight in the war. After the war, Denham Springs continued to grow with new businesses and residences being built throughout the years.
