Deridder, Louisiana is a small town in the US state of Louisiana. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Deridder was founded in 1820 by white men from Kentucky as a trading post on the Mississippi River. The first store and school were built there in 1824. In 1830, Deridder became a parish in Rapides Parish and incorporated as a village in 1840. Deridder had a post office from 1836 to 1941. The oil rig "Shamrock" exploded offshore on November 12, 1986 killing 45 people and injuring more than 200 others, most of them offshore workers who were hosing down the rig when it exploded. The disaster led to increased public awareness of dangers associated with offshore oil drilling and led to Deridder becoming an "oil capital" for much of southeast Louisiana due to the influx of investment following the accident. In 2013, Derridder beat out seven other towns to be chosen as one of two anchor communities for New Orleans's St Bernard Parish redevelopment project which aimed to improve economic opportunities for low-income residents there. Derridder has also been home to many professional athletes over the years including former LSU linebacker Reggie Bush and current NFL tight end Julius Thomas

Today, the USAF Gift History Library preserves over 1,500 gift baskets from across the military branches dating back to World War II. These baskets are representative of every type of occasion - from birthdays to military funerals - and offer an insight into theair force's culture, customs and preferences. One of the most famous gift basket deployments was during Operation Neptune's Spear, which was responsible for liberating Afghanistan from Russian occupation in 1979. The USAF giver- Receiver exchange program yielded many memorable moments during that time period including President Jimmy Carter shaking hands with Soviet General Yuri Andropov after presenting him with a basket filled with cigars, cigarettes and chocolate bars.
