Deridder, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Jefferson City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Deridder was originally settled by French colonists in 1718. In 1802, the United States acquired it from France as part of Jackson Purchase. The early settlers were men who had come to work on the railroad. They named their community Deridder after deriding one another for having brought so much dirt and rocks with them when they left France. The town grew quickly because of its location on the then new rail line between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Manufacturing and service industries soon became dominant in Deridder, as did farming and hunting opportunities for locals and visitors alike. By 1960, however, manufacturing had all but disappeared and most residents had returned to farm life or worked in nearby cities or townships. However, there are a few exceptions to this trend: One section of town contains some of the oldest evidence of human habitation in Greater New Orleans; another has been home to a number of jazz clubs since the late 1990s; and still others have seen recent redevelopment including office buildings, housing developments, stores and restaurants

Deridder is a small town in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. The first people to inhabit Deridder were Native Americans who came from Wisconsin in the 1500s. They built a small village on the river bank near where it now stands. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson and his army fought an unsuccessful battle against a Confederate force at Deridder Bridge. The bridge was destroyed but not before providing access for Union forces across the river to Manchester and other points west. The town was founded by settlers from Ohio in 1839. By 1860, when Lafayette Parish was formed, Deridder had become one of its most important settlements due to its strategic location on I-10 just east of downtown Baton Rouge and its connections with other eastern Louisiana communities such as New Orleans and Shreveport. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his troops to burn down all bridges over the Vermilion River in Central Louisiana so that Union forces would be forced to cross at more difficultly situated fords located downstream. Union forces succeeded in destroying many of these fords but not at Deridder Bridge which remains one of Baton Rouge's most impressive tourist attractions today. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Deridder became known as a center for African American businesses because of its close proximity to cotton plantations run by white farmers. This period saw some growth and development within the community with new shopping malls being erected and schools constructed including one that became known as "the black school" (now Grambling State University). During World War II,Deridder played an important role as a munitions plant producing aircraft parts for both Allied and Axis forces alike. After the war ended, many jobs were lost due to economy decline throughout much of Louisiana however Deridder continued posting modest levels of poverty until around 1990 when it began experiencing increasing levels of poor economic conditions which have persisted ever since statewide . In recent years there has been an effort underway led by local business owners called " deridere renaissance" which has seen some revitalization occur within deridere including several small businesses opening up along with efforts being made to improve water quality through improvements made to main street
