The United States Naval Forces in the Gulf of Mexico (USNIFMG) is responsible for implementing and supporting Operation Neptune's Spear, the military campaign against Osama bin Laden. The gift history of USNS Gretna dates back to World War II when the town was home to a Navy air station. The base closed in 1992, but its legacy lives on in the form of two naval installations: USS George Washington National Monument and USS Constitution Museum. During the Cold War, the Naval Air Station at Corpus Christi operated two Boeing 727-200 jet trainers that were used by Admiral Chester Nimitz as part of his "Flying Cadet" program. In 2014, USS George Washington National Monument opened its doors to visitors who could explore both buildings and their associated artifacts from various periods including World War II through the Vietnam era. Since 1990, there have been multiple deployments by both Navy ships and Marines ashore in support of Operation Neptune's Spear. These deployments have included amphibious assaults such as Beach Head during Hurricane Katrina; Search and Rescue operations during disasters like Hurricane Irene; humanitarian aid missions such as relief efforts following earthquakes or tsunamis; and counterpiracy patrols off Libyan coastlines. The USS George Washington National Monument has become an important stop for visitors on their way to see other parts of USNS Gretna's naval history. In addition to providing a unique perspective on local maritime history, it also houses several exhibits related to Operation Neptune's Spear which include an exhibit about Navy pilots flying over Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom; an exhibit about Marine snipers attacking Taliban positions duringOperation Neptune's Spear; and an interactive exhibit called "A History of Sailors' Gifts." This interactive exhibit allows visitors to learn more about what sailors brought home with them upon their return from combat zones around the world. 1) On February 14th 1942, while HMS Argus was moored at Corpus Christi Bayou Lafourche near where she would later be renamed USS Constitution Museum after serving in World War II as HMAS Sydney (CV-4), a group of six seamen from HMS Rattlesnake arrived aboard HMAS Melbourne (LF-7). The U.S. Navy has Deployed Gifts for Many Generations, Whether It Be In support of a War or Peaceful Event. The History of the Navy’s Deployment Gift history can be traced back to 1775 when Commodore James Cook sailed on his first circumnavigation of the world and brought back charts and scientific data that helped build America’s fledgling navy. In 1898, during World War I, the United States joined forces with Great Britain to form the Allied Powers and began a conflict that would last for years. The United States had no standing army at the time so gifts were necessary in order to show support for allied forces. From 1917-1918, American sailors sent parcels filled with food and clothing to their war partners in Europe as part of the “Gift of America” campaign. This was also the year that President Woodrow Wilson announced his plans for WORLD WAR II and requested Congress provide $15 million dollars for military supplies and equipment shipment overseas. During WWII, gift giving became an important tool for displaying patriotism on both sides of the battlefield. Ships carrying munitions arrived at Naval Base Guam with crates full of products such as candy bars, cigarettes, coffee beans, flour sacks etc., which were distributed among troops stationed there as well as local civilians who Provided hospitality while soldiers fought in combat areas far from home. During Operation Neptune Spear (the largest naval operation ever mounted), USS Voyager dropped bombs onto Japanese targets off Kwajalein Atoll without warning resulting in over 100 deaths including many Sailors including our own Commander William Shatner who personally delivered dinner to members of Japan’s Imperial Royal Family
