It was founded by French colonists in 1763 as Pointe-à-Pitre. In 1802, it was named for General Andrew Jackson. The first post office in Gretna opened on July 1, 1811. In 1830, the town became a part of New Orleans and was renamed Metairie. The name change came about because of the many times that Gretna had been threatened by pirates who terrorized the area at that time. In 1872, Hurricane Isaac destroyed most of Metairie and much of Lafourche Parish and all but three blocks of Gretna were destroyed or heavily damaged including what is now known as Stroud's Storehouse where early settlers gathered to rebuild before moving to their permanent homes elsewhere in present day Jefferson Parish. After Isaac arrived in August 1972, Federal troops helped rebuild Gretana with help from state troopers under then Governor Edwin Edwards; restoration began on October 1st following an order from President Richard Nixon that FEMA provide immediate assistance to communities hit hard by disasters such as hurricanes Katrina and Rita which had struck coastal areas across America less than two weeks earlier Today, there are over 100 businesses operating within the limits of Gretna proper with another 100+ properties licensed to sell agricultural products within 5 miles radius .
