The United States Army has been deployed in Houma, Louisiana since the early 1800s. The present-day Houma Volunteer Infantry Battalion was organized on December 12, 1892 and became the 1st Regiment of Volunteer Infantry in 1895. The battalion was originally composed of French Creole men who had enlisted to fight for their country during World War I. In 1940, the battalion became a unit of the Louisiana National Guard and served with distinction during World War II. After the war, the battalion was amalgamated with other units to form the 3rd Regiment of Volunteer Infantry in 1954. The regiment has served throughout Louisiana and currently operates as part of Brigade Combat Team 2 (BCT-2) at Camp New Orleans. Despite this personal stand against institutionalized brutality Beasley remains enshrined in history as one of America's most decorated soldiers - posthumously awarded boththe Medal Of Honor (the first ever awarded to an American serviceman killed in action)as wellas numerous campaign medals including three Purple Hearts (the second most common award for heroism among combat veterans).
