Jennings, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Jefferson in the north-central part of Louisiana. It has a population of 5,574 as of 2010. The first military installation in Jennings was an artillery battery built by the United States Army at a location known as Fort Polk on November 10, 1802. The present day United States Military Academy at West Point was founded in 1855 by General Andrew Jackson and is one of the most prestigious military academies in the world. For many years Jennings served as home to what was believed to be the largest African American regiment in history - The 1st Infantry Regiment (Caucasian) which disbanded in 1967 after serving two wartime tours with distinction. After World War II, Jenkinsons saw its heyday as a manufacturing center for munitions and defense products such as aircraft engines, rockets and missiles. Jennings, Louisiana was established in 1836 by James W. Jennings as a post office on the Mississippi River. The town was named for James W. Jennings, who had come to the area in 1824 and homesteaded land at what is now Jenningsville. The first store on the site opened in 1837. In 1840, Jenningsville became a government post with its own jail and other facilities. The town grew rapidly, thanks to its riverine location and easy access to goods from north of the Mississippi River. By 1865, Jenningsville had a population of 2,500 people and was served by two newspapers: the "Jenningsville Democrat" and the "Jenningsville Herald". In 1879, due to an increase in heavy cotton production in nearby Jefferson Parish, Jenningsville began to experience significant economic decline. The combination of higher prices for goods imported from Canada (due to railroad construction) and low crop yields caused problems for local businesses throughout much of southern Louisiana during this period. By 1886, when oil started flowing southward through the Edwards Aquifer into Louisiana from Texas, commercial activity revived enough that Jenningsville again became an important center of trade and industry. By 1932, however, Economic Depression-era policies had caused a sharp downturn in local business conditions; although the town continued to grow steadily until World War II brought about a temporary resurgence (during which time it attained even larger population levels), it then experienced steady declines thereafter until its final extinction in 2000.
