The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office has been providing law enforcement services in the town of Lafayette since 1833. In honor of this long history, the department has created a special thank you gift history for military officers who have served in the parish over the years. The first sheriff's office was established at the foot of Elm Street in downtown Lafayette. It was moved to its current location on Iberville Street in 1922. In 1941, a jail and prison were built on Magazine Road in Lafayette and the sheriff's office relocated to it. In 1959, a new courthouse was built on US Highway 7 and the sheriff's office moved into it. In 1984, a new jail and police department were built on State Highway 87 near Interstate 10. The sheriff's office relocated back to Magazine Road in 1991.
