Lake Charles, Louisiana is a town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 25,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Lake Charles were French settlers who arrived in 1718 and 1719. The first Englishman to settle in what is now Lake Charles was John Lawless who arrived on an expedition from Mobile Bay in 1802. In 1830, Samuel Stoneman founded a small settlement near present-day Magnolia Street and Live Oaks Boulevard known as White Sulphur Springs after purchasing some land east of the Mississippi River from the Comanche people. The town's name may be derived from white sulfur springs which could be found near where it stands today. Lake Charles was platted by George Higginson on January 26, 1839 as a result of his purchase of 4200 acres (1 km2) of land west of Carthage Road and north of Lakeshore Drive from Anthony Carondelet for $7000USD/. On November 14, 1848, it was renamed for General James K. Polk during his visit to the area as part ofPresident Polk's survey tour across southern Louisiana.
