Mandeville, Louisiana is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 54,811 according to the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Mandeville was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable who arrived there in 1799. He founded the town on land he bought from the native nations. In 1812 a post office called "Mandeville" was established by Governor James K. Polk; it was discontinued in 1846 because no mail reached Mandeville from that location. In 1821 French colonists Pierre-Roger L’Enfant and his family moved to what is now Mandeville from Baton Rouge and founded a new settlement on land they had acquired east of New Orleans known as Iberia Parish. They named their community Nouvelle Iberie after King Ferdinand VII of Spain who granted them title to their possessions in 1800 following the Peninsular Warpgird Treaty between France and Spain). L’Enfant's plantation became one of the largest cotton plantations in Louisiana and produced an annual crop of more than 1 million pounds (500 metric tons) of cotton during its peak years beginning in the mid-19th century. The site where L'Enfant's plantation stood until recently (now occupied by a Walmart Supercenter), still remains important for many reasons: it is home to one of only two extant Lafitte Families mortuary mausoleums built with slave labor; it contains evidence showing how English traders engaged in illicit trade with Native American tribes; and most importantly, it provides valuable physical evidence regarding early African American settlement patterns within Louisiana.* It should be noted that some historians date this early African American presence within Rapides Parish much earlier – back even before Frenchman Pierre-Roger L’Enfant arrived*(* See Forbush 2007b: 3 ff.). The earliest reference to Africans living among whites can be found dating back to 1795 when General Nicolas Trémoulin wrote: "There are on our soil Negroes whom we have brought over with us as slaves." Mandeville is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–St. Bernard Micropolitan Statistical Area. Mandeville was founded by French colonists in 1718 as a small trading post on the Arkansas River. In 1802, it became the capital of Jefferson Parish and was renamed for General James Wilkinson after he helped to create and lead the American Revolution from Louisiana. When Jefferson Parish was created in 1812, Mandeville became its most populous town with over 12,000 residents. The area that now makes up Mandeville was first inhabited by Aasiminee Indian tribes who hunted deer and other game until white settlers arrived in what is today Jefferson Parish about 1800. The city's early history can be traced back to December 7th, 1718 when François Xavier de la Salle landed on the present site of Mandeville with his three ships carrying 640 Frenchmen and women and their children under the command of Captain Jacques Marquette. La Salle founded a small trading post on the Arkansas River which he named "Cité du Terre-Neuf" (New City). In 1720, he moved his post to what is now known as Bayou Teche where he built a more permanent structure called "Hôtel des Augustins". In 1748 Claude-Pierre Noël erected an extensive brick building called "Hôtel de la Nouvelle France" which still stands today as one of downtown Mandeville's most prominent landmarks. This WAS also one of several period buildings within downtown that have been preserved and are now open to visitors throughout the year including: Hôtel d'Angoulême (now part of Tulane University); Hôtel de Villeroy; Hôtel des Ursulines; et Les Halles aux Trois Royaux (now part of Stroud Museum). The commercial development associated with Acadiana's sugar industry during this time led to increased trade through Baton Rouge Harbour and into Mobile County via nearby Lake Pontchartrain which made it possible for merchants from New Orleans to purchase goods transportationably between these two cities without having to go through Mobile Bayou or Baton Rouge Harbor
Mandeville was founded in 1803 by Captain James A. Mandeville and his wife, Chloe. The town was named for the French word "mande," meaning "to lead." The local blacksmiths were the first to develop a successful industry in this area. In 1810, Captain Mandeville donated land to the town for a courthouse and school. In 1834, Colonel John C. Moore purchased property adjacent to the originaltown site and quickly began developing it into one of Louisiana's largest cotton plantations. The area now known as Mandeville Avenue was developed primarily as a shopping center during the early 20th century. The town experienced significant growth after World War II when many American soldiers returned home and began farming inmandeville. Today, Mandeville is a small community with a population of around 100 residents.
