As with most rural areas in Louisiana these days (and many larger towns too), there are few public buildings other than churches and schools - everything else serving as businesses or residences has either been built up or replaced over time by more recent development including office towers and homes surrounding malls now that Natchitocches enjoys some rather high-tech amenities thanks to its location on Interstate 10 just outside Baton Rouge proper! It’s interesting to note that while Baton Rouge’s population swelled noticeably (to almost 40% according to 2010 estimates) within hurricane Katrina’s zone – due largely to refugees seeking safety here – none of that growth seems likely destined for Natchitoches particularly given that even today it still ranks relatively low among major US metros both in terms acreage cultivated (5%) and number Of residents (+2%). Natchitoches is a town in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,711 as of the 2010 census. It is the largest community in the parish and one of its most populous areas. Natchitoches is also home to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and many other businesses and services located there. The first Europeans to reach what is now Natchitoches were French colonists who arrived on November 29, 1804. They founded a trading post called "Fort Moselle" on an island in the river La Salle they had discovered while exploring upstream (the present-day site of Lafayette). The post was abandoned by 1830 because it was too difficult to defend against British attacks from that direction; however, French traders continued to visit the island until 1834 when they abandoned it again because of American expansion into Louisiana. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson's newly formed Department of Indian Affairs established a small fort at what is now Natchitoches for Indian soldiers stationed along the eastern border of New Orleans County (later named Orleans Parish) under Major General James K. Polk's command during Reconstruction after the Civil War. In 1840, Elisha Pearcy established a ranch at what is now Bellefontaine Street in Natchitoches which became one of America's earliest cotton plantations with slaves imported from Africa beginning in 1793; this plantation passed through several hands before becoming part of John A. Pearcy & Co., Ltd., a cotton shipping company founded by John A. Pearcy in 1898 which became part of Gulf Oil Corporation upon its merger with Standard Oil Company in 1960 (Gulf Oil Corporation then merged into ExxonMobil). During World War II, local merchant sailors helped supply military forces ashore on both coasts via steamboats long before jetliners came about; USS "Natchez", built 1915-1916 converted 1938-1939 into an amphibious assault ship used primarily for landing troops and supplies near Tulane beachheads during World War II; USS "Pascagoula" built 1919 converted 1944-1945 into an all-purpose auxiliary warship used mainly for training Navy SEALS off shore facilities common throughout Gulf Coast waters since 1945; USS "Tuscaloosa" built 1922 converted 1941-1942 into an amphibious assault ship used primarily for landings near Anacostia River estuary during World War II; USS "Harpers Ferry" class Landing Ship Tank (LST) built 1929 as conversions 1939/40 - 1942/43 ex USATRANSportation Service Corp.; LST(s) built between 1930 and 1958: SS(es), SC(es), LA(es); all currently retired or decommissioned In 1954, construction began on Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base San Antonio Baytown which would become homeport for Naval aviation operations aboard Navy ships moored at San Antonio Baytown until 1980 when installation was moved ashore to Naval Air Station Corpus Christi Air Force Base concurrent with their closure there following Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm – Operation Neptune’s Spear In 1957 Hurricane Betsy struck southern Louisiana causing extensive damage including loss or destruction of over 60%+of downtown Natchitoches village center Follett says “It destroyed everything within 500 feet! There were no injuries but we lost our library...
