The New Orleans Army National Guard has been deployed in support of U.S. military operations since 1898. The unit was activated as the 1st Louisiana Infantry Regiment on October 25, 1898 and served in various engagements during the Spanish-American War and World War I. The regiment was redesignated as the 1st Louisiana Infantry Brigade on November 15, 1917 and again on September 10, 1921 when it became triangularized into brigades/divisions under Lieutenant General James Forrestal. On July 29, 1936 the brigade became organized into three divisions which were redesignated as brigades/divisions on December 16, 1936: (1) 3rd Division - redesignated as 4th Brigade/Division; (2) 5th Division - redesignated as 6th Brigade/division; (3) 7th Division - redesignating as 8th Brigade/division; all these brigades were reorganized and disbanded after World War II. In 1958 the brigade became known as the New Orleans Army National Guard Museum's "First Battalion" units series with Headquarters and Headquarters Company serving concurrently within Reserve Component unit 2nd Battalion, 9th Armored Cavalry Regiment at Baton Rouge until its activation in 1983 where it operated from within Training Command headquarters until its disbandment in 2006. On August 26, 2006 members of United States Marine Band played for a ceremonial parade through downtown New Orleans to mark the 50-year anniversary of being activated to serve our country overseas while also honoring fallen Marines who fought during WWII including Private First Class Leroy JONES who diedretted posthumously after his death while assigned to Company K-5 with Marine Barracks Company No 2 at Camp Pendleton Naval Station California
