The New Orleans Navy Yard was the first naval installation in Louisiana, and it served as the main depot for the American navy until 1821. The present-day Naval Station New Orleans was founded in 1898 by Rear Admiral John D. Stockton, Commander of the United States Pacific Fleet. The station played a significant role in World War II and has been home to various warships since then. Today, the Naval Station New Orleans is one of America's most important maritime facilities, responsible for providing services to all U.S. Navy ships stationed in Gulfport and related areas. The history of navy gift history in New Orleans can be traced back to 1821 when Commodore James Cook sailed into what is now known as Mobile Bay on April 5th with his fleet of three vessels – the USS Constitution (1801), USS Albatross (1802), and HMS Beagle (1804) – looking for a new route to Asia bypassing Cape Horn. A group of Frenchmen had already established Mobile as an important trading center on Alabama’s coast; they were not interested in supplying America with goods through this land route but rather importing them from France through Spanish ports upriver. Commodore Cook decided that Mobile would be an ideal location for a naval base because its strategic location made it difficult for enemy forces to retake or damage it, as well as its excellent harbor resources which could accommodate American warships moored there during peacetime and wartime operations. Commodore Cook ordered Captain William Bainbridge, captain of HMS Discovery (the only ship available at that time capable of sailing across open water without assistance), to establish himself at Mobile and begin construction on Fort Brooke upon orders from President James Kenedy on July 21st, 1821.* In order build Fort Brooke and other infrastructure necessary for the future military operation at Mobile Bay, Captain Bainbridge requisitioned labor from Native Americans who he estimated would cost "$5 per day"*. This work began on September 9th under command of Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers* (*Bainbridge’s subordinate). Construction progressed slowly due to lack of supplies; however, within two monthsCaptain Bainbridge had erected batteries “to worthy purpose”††(*near where today’s Arsenal Street meets Saint James Avenue). On November 10th Commodore Cook arrived off shore with his squadron consisting of USS Constitution*, USS Albatross*, HMS Beagle*,Capture HMS Pomponius* (*which had been captured by USS Constitution)*(*Port Royal*)and released merchant vessel Guerriere (#1) into Confederate hands after she unsuccessfully attempted piracy against American vessels.* In addition to these coastal defenses at Mobile Bay, additional fortifications were built along Lafitte River leading upriver: Fort de Grave #2 was completed early in 1825 while Fort de Chartres (#3) followed later that year.* At this point Commandant Rodgers converted Baton Rouge Barracks into Camp Morton which became operational on December 1st following disbursement by Commodore Cook††(*Rogers left behind General Banks commandant post at Baton Rouge Barracks effective January 1st 1822)). The first troops ashore at Camp Morton were also those who had landed at Pensacola earlier that year under Lieutenant Colonel John Watts (*Watts succeeded Rogers as Commandant March 12th 1821). As part of their preparations for battle against Spanish forces near Pensacola *(February 8th - 11th 1820), Watts organizedivory-mounted militia composed largelyof African Americans numbering about 775 men led by Captain David Levy [*who also volunteered his services*]. Ultimately though no battle took place because San Antonio de Padua surrendering Spain Forces before any hostilities could take place.)
