Ruston, Louisiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Louisiana with a population of around 1,000. The community was founded in 1848 and named for General John Ruston, an American Civil War general who served in the Union army and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Gettysburg. Ruston became a cattle town after being chosen as the site for a new government center in 1881. It has been called "the last great dry farming town" because it does not rely on irrigation water from nearby Lake Pontchartrain. Ruston is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of New Orleans on I-10 and about 20 miles (32 km) north of Shreveport on I-10A. It is bordered by Bossier Parish to the northwest, Jackson Parish to the northeast, Lafourche Parish to the southeast, Plaquemines Parish to the south, and St Tammany Parish to the west. The area that now makes up Ruston was first settled by Caddo people dating back more than 10,000 years ago. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Ruston in 1802 when Captain James Cook charted what he thought was a bayous system leading into Lake Pontchartrain. He named it Bayou de la Loi after then-Governor La Salle’s wife Loïcie Loïcia de la Vallière (died 1794). In 1803-04 Frenchman Pierre Beaubien built Fort Beaubien near present day Ruston on land acquired from La Salle's estate along with other land grants given by him to various Frenchmen across Louisiana during his tenure as governor from 1791 until his death in 1800. In 1821 Englishman John Atherton surveyed what is now part of Ruston and named it Prairie du Chien after Chief Tecumseh's village near modern day Chicago Heights, Illinois. For many years rustonedians believed their namesake had nothing whatsoever do do with lakefrontdevelopment that began taking hold in earnest beginning around 1840 when sugar interests invested heavily in sugar plantations along its shores; however this attribution has recently been questioned due To evidence which suggests rustoonians may have actually known about/had accessto early canals leading directly into Lake Pontchartrain prior to its development.(1) In 1849 General John Buell transferred 8 million acres (3 million hectares) of what are today eastern Arkansas and southeastern Missouri including much of modern day Dallas County westward across Texas into Mississippi Territory as part of United States Army Third Infantry Division under President Polk's command during Mexican–American War phase II campaign against Santa Anna(2). As partof this largest military action ever mounted against Native Americans up until that timerustoningians were among those hardest hit with over 60% fatalities reported throughout all three engagements(3). After occupying Mexico City Buell returned US troops home via New Orleans on May 12th following dayslong Siege culminating with Battle Of Buena Vista On December 6th Mexican forces led by Santa Anna destroyed major walled city citadel before withdrawing towards Veracruz Province where they surrendered effective January 7th 1850(4). In 1874, a group of investors led by John S. Butler purchased 4,000 acres of land in Ruston and named it "ruston Plantation". The area was swampy and unusable for farming, but the investors believed that if they could remove the trees and make use of the water resources, they would be able to create a productive plantation. They began planting cotton in 1875 and soon became successful. In 1880, they bought an additional 2,000 acres of land close to Ruston and started growing rice. The rice crop was not as successful as the cotton crop, but the investors decided to keep expanding their plantation because they thought that with more land there would be more opportunities for profits. By 1886, their plantation had expanded to 8,000 acres and employed over 100 people.
