Ruston, Louisiana is a small town in the US state of Louisiana. The population was 2,843 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Vicksburg, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area. The rustling of the cotton fields and cattle on the open range brought people to Ruston from all around during its early days. By 1892, there were just over 100 residents and 10 businesses in what is now Ruston. The first post office in Ruston was established in 1892. At that time, it was called "New Orleans". In 1907, it changed its name to "Ruston" after General John Custer's death at Battle of Little Bighorn. The community continued to grow until World War II when it lost most of its population due to war-related relocation (mainly within Mississippi). In 1945, Ruston became an air force base for Northwest Airlines as their main hub for eastern Gulfport and southeastern Mississippi. After closure of Northwest Airlines' main hub in 1991, rustons saw increasing economic growth as a result of various trucking companies that have located here including grain elevator operators and plastics manufacturers; however recent downturns have caused some loss among these businesses although they are stillmostly present today Today,ruston remains largely agricultural with limited commercial development except for a few small shops dotting Main Street which serve primarily local produce

Ruston is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 14,521 at the 2010 census. Ruston is part of the New Orleans Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a French Settlement in 1805 and was named for General Marcellus Houstons Ruston who fought with General Jackson against Native Americans in the Battle of New Orleans on August 29, 1805. The first post office was established in October 1811. In 1825, an act to create Jefferson Parish was passed and Ruston became one of its first townships. A courthouse and jail were built in 1830 and 1831 respectively. The first school district was created in 1858 and name changed to the Ruston School District which included present-day Ruston and parts of Immaculate Conception Parish A cotton gin opened near the intersection of I-10/I-15 (now US 90) and Wabash Avenue on December 4, 1898 by Denton Murchison & Sons Ltd.. It remained open until 1915 when it closed due to World War I bombing raids by American bombers over France. The earliest known reference to Ruston is in a document from the year 1040, which refers to an area called "Rousdon". The name was derived from the River Rous and its numerous tributaries. By 1800, Ruston had a population of around 350 people. It became a city in 1868 and boundaries changed again in 1898 when it merged with Monroe.
