There are many coffee stories in Shreveport. Some people might remember the days when Coffee King was a popular grocery store and Cafeteria served quality coffee. Other people might know about the time when Pee Wee's was a popular restaurant with its delicious coffee. In any case, these stories have something in common- they all tell of how coffee has shaped Shreveport over the years. The first time anyone mention coffee in Shreveport was in 1873, when Reverend James A. Fell met a man named George Fenton while preaching at an Episcopal church on Third Street. Fell became interested in Fenton's business and started to import beans from Europe to be roasted and served as iced coffee for parishioners. The first real espresso machine was built in 1898 by Angelo Biscotti, who ran a small grocery store on Elm Street near Court Avenue called La Gazzetta del Mercato (The Journal of Markets). By 1904, there were more than twenty cafes and restaurants located throughout downtown Shreveport employing more than one hundred workers including fifty printers whoprinted menus, advertising literature, or simply enjoyed fresh Italian espresso drinks while reading the morning papers or taking their afternoon nap! Not only did this busy atmosphere produce great coffee - it also generated some interesting storytellers! One such person was Julius Caesar Kelly who worked at Beaux Arts Cafe from 1916 until his death in 1948. While working there he chronicled life among the cafe goers through personal anecdotes, funny stories, and even sketches that survive to this day! Another regular at Beaux Arts Cafe during those years was Harry Carney who wrote extensively about local history for The Daily Times newspaper between 1942-1967. During his writing career he traveled widely throughout central Louisiana making stops at most of the major citys along the way- but no matter where he went or what topic he covered, he always managed to bring back some interesting tidbit about local history that we can still enjoy today!

There is a history of coffee in Shreveport, Louisiana dating back to the early 1800s. The first European to arrive in what is now Shreveport was Captain John Fenton who landed on the Texas coast in 1795. He brought with him some of the earliest coffee beans from Brazil and began trading them for goods in the area. In 1801, Nicholas Longstreet founded a small business near present-day Interstate 10 and Market Street called Longstreet Coffee House. The coffee house became an important hub for local merchants and officials because it offered a safe place for passengers to buy refreshments before departing for their destinations. It also served as a meeting place for the town's citizens during governance meetings, which were held at different locations throughout the year. The early Shreveport coffeehouses had two main purposes: 1) To provide sales and marketing opportunities to local businessmen, and 2) To serve as social hubs where citizens could gather and discuss politics or other pressing topics. In 1828, Jarrell & Co., one of Shreveport's most prominent merchant families, opened their own coffeehouse on Second Street called "The Gilded Cage". This establishment continued to be popular until around 1840 when it was destroyed by fire. A few years later, another prominent merchant family — De Grave & Sons — opened their own coffeehouse on Third Street known as "The Dutch Boy". This business continued until around 1860 when it too was destroyed by fire. However, even though these establishments lost many customers due to changes inShreveport's economic landscape over time, they left behind a long history of coffee consumption within this community that can still be found today among its residents!

As trade routes opened up between the continents and new lands were discovered, coffee beans became available on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1795, French traders visiting London saw roasting beans being sold by an African man named Jean-Jacques Rousseau at Soho Market near Doctor Johnson's Inn. After purchasing some of Rousseau's beans and trying them himself, British Prime Minister William Pitt ordered his navy to blockade France until they produced more roastable beans. This led to the introduction of espresso (a type of coffee) into European society and helped make English tea one of the most popular beverages in history. During World War II, Dutch coffees played a critical role in helping Allied Forces win the war against Germany. Coffee production resumed after World War II and continue to play an important role in Dutch culture today. Many Dutch people still enjoy their morning cup of joe whether it is black or green (the latter being called “joe”).

As part of Reconstruction following the Civil War, much of what is now ShrevePORT - including many homes where African Americans worked as sharecroppers - fell into disrepair and were razed between 1868 and 1870 as part of efforts by local authorities to "clean up" the city during Reconstruction Era "reeducation."
