The Navy has been a part of Louisiana for over 200 years. The Naval Base in Slidell was first established in 1795 and continues to be one of the largest naval installations in the United States. Dennison ordered construction of two warships – USS Constitution (1824) and USS Monitor (1829). These vessels would serve as a deterrent against French pirates harassing American merchant shipping along these waterways. In 1836, Congress passed an act authorizing appropriations for building three more warships – USS George Washington (1836), USS Constitution Museum (1837) and USS Maine (1838). These ships would become known as “the Great Lakes Fleet” because they served on Lake Michigan throughout most of their careers. The Great Lakes Fleet was instrumental in defeating Tecumseh during the Indian War (1849-54). Following America’s purchase of Mexico from Spain in 1848, President James Kenedy established a Western Mexican Squadron at Veracruz under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter which patrolled northern waters off Texas coast until 1850 when he transferred command to Commodore Stephen Farragut Jr.. This squadron became known as “the Pacific Squadron” after Commodore Farragut's successful campaign against Spanish forces at Vera Cruz during Operation Crossroads in April 1862 which ended Mexican independence threats throughout Central America; this campaign later helped win US annexation of California Commodore Lew Wallace's donation $1 million towards restoration project

Slidell was founded by French colonists in 1718 as a trading post on the Mississippi River. After passage of the Ku Klux Klan's law in 1938 prohibiting integration, Slidell began to blacken again and its reputation for racism has been tarnished ever since. The town lies on a deltaplain that supports several large tidal marshes and relies heavily on fishing for its subsistence and export income; however, overfishing has caused declines in both populations of seagulls and crabs, which have led to an increasingly dire environmental situation. The town also suffers from a high rate of poverty, with nearly 60% of residents living below the poverty line according to 2005 census data.
