The Marine Corps has a long and proud history of deploying gift-givers to support Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Afghanistan War. Westwego is a town in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–St. Martin metropolitan area. Westwego was founded by French colonists in 1718 as La Grange and named for Mount Wewego, in present-day southwestern France. The original Westwego post office was established on November 3, 1826. The town's first mayor and clerk were James Ransom and Drury Noble. In 1857, west of center on the now Inner Loop Road (US 90), the first cotton gin was built by John King Fenton and others to process cottonseed oil imported from England. The first flour mill was built near what is now I-10 east of downtown in1869 by Mr. Silliman & Bros., who also erected a log store with frame buildings on the site that later became known as the Old Courthouse Square Shopping Center; this structure still stands today as part of Union Bank Plaza shopping center off US 180 just outside of downtown Westwegotown limits). That same year saw construction of the first church in what would become Westwego when Father Richard Jourdain organized an Episcopal congregation there under his guidance in December 1868 from a group he had gathered around Thibodaux Parish's new parish church at blanco Pointe (now parts of Metairie and Kenner). By 1870, it looked like annexation attempts by neighboring parishs would succeed despite spirited resistance led by Mayor George Boutros; but when it came time for papers to be drawn up annexing both parishes because their churches had not yet been completed--Boutros got sidetracked trying to get money from New Orleans to fund his own campaigns instead--the incorporators failed to turn up with plans for their proposed village/township even though they knew full well they would have received legal recognition if they had done so...In 1872-3 General Troup'sArmy overran much of Acadiana during its Campaign against Confederate generalsand burned all or mostof Baton Rouge before retreating back into Louisiana; so muchso that Baton Rougebecame almost uninhabitable again until reestablishing itself as an American city late in that decade...In 1865 President Andrew Johnson signed legislation creating four Military Districts across Louisiana including one centered onNew Orleans which included Westwego; henceforth our name
