Airforce gift history in Aberdeen, Maryland began with the founding of the United States Air Force by General George Washington on September 14, 1947. The USAF was created as a result of the National Security Act of 1947 and it was through this act that Congress authorized President Harry Truman to establish a Joint Chiefs of Staff to provide military leadership for Allied forces in Europe. The USAF’s first headquarters was located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Inactivated on July 1, 1952, the USAF became component parts of the newly created Department of Defense. On December 4, 1958, General Curtis LeMay activated Aerospace Command which oversaw all aspects of air warfare. On October 15, 1960 General Maxwell Taylor assumed command as Commander-in-Chief and Chief Modernization officer for Aerospace Command. This position held until February 25, 1967 when he became Commander Fleet Forces Atlantic (CFLF) headquartered at Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he served until his retirement on May 1, 1971. One important aspect within the USAF gift history is its relationship to Boeing Corporation. From its inception in 1948 until 1985 Boeing contributed over $5 billion to aerospace research and development alone! During World War II Boeing donated more than 740 airplanes including most famously their B-29 Superfortress bomber which flew strategic bombing raids against Japan during World War II. After World War II Boeing resumed donations totaling $27 million per year until their bankruptcy in 1984 however they continue make significant contributions today totaling over $2 billion annually!
